3-D Secure is a secure procedure for making online payments offered by Mastercard® and Visa together with PostFinance. You confirm your online purchases via the PostFinance App or an SMS code, thereby protecting yourself against unauthorized use of your card. 3-D Secure requires only a one-time activation – and it’s free. You must have a Swiss mobile phone number.

How can I activate 3-D Secure?

You have three options for activating 3-D Secure.
If you have the PostFinance App or e-finance access, you can activate 3-D Secure quickly and easily. If you don’t have the PostFinance App or e-finance, activate 3-D Secure by entering the card data and your card account number.

How to pay for online purchases securely with 3-D Secure

When paying in online shops, you may be prompted to confirm your purchase. If you have not activated 3-D Secure, your PostFinance Card is not enabled for all online purchases, and your payment may be terminated.

Via face or fingerprint recognition

You will receive a push notification from the PostFinance App. Check that the details, such as retailer name, amount and purchase date, are all correct. After checking, validate the payment by means of face or fingerprint recognition. 

Via an SMS code

You will receive a code via SMS. Confirm the purchase by entering the code in the payment screen which appears on the display. 

Note: If something seems suspicious to you, abort the transaction by rejecting the push notification or not entering the SMS code. Call the number on the back of your card to have it blocked, or block it yourself in the app under > More > My cards.

  • 3-D Secure is a standard from Mastercard/Visa and PostFinance for secure payment online. The free service provides additional protection against unauthorized use of your card. More and more online retailers are using 3-D Secure. It is the retailer’s responsibility to decide whether a transaction is processed via the 3-D Secure procedure.

  • Yes, the 3-D Secure procedure is available immediately after one-time activation.

  • In this situation, you receive a new card. If the 3-D Secure procedure had already been activated on the lost card, the new card does not have to be activated again.

  • It is the retailer’s responsibility to decide whether a transaction is processed via the 3-D Secure procedure. Activate 3-D Secure to ensure your card is enabled for all online purchases.
