Apprenticeships: mediamatics technician at PostFinance

Simon Wüthrich is in the fourth year of his apprenticeship as a mediamatics technician with Swiss Post, Federal VET Diploma, and is undertaking the placement at PostFinance. In this video, he tells us why the job is perfect for him and what he particularly appreciates about PostFinance as a training company. Simon Wüthrich has always had a keen interest in technology and IT, but is also passionate about design. “So the role of mediamatics technician is just perfect for me”, explains the 19-year-old, who is in the fourth and final year of his apprenticeship at PostFinance. He is getting to grips with a very varied profession.

What does a mediamatics technician do?

Mediamatics technicians carry out photo and video projects, illustrate and design print media, and they create and maintain websites. As part of the apprenticeship, they get an in-depth look at the disciplines of media, communication, marketing, design, IT, project management and administration, making them veritable all-rounders.

  • Abstract logical thinking and technical understanding are essential for analyzing and implementing complex challenges. At the same time, the profession requires a great deal of creativity, especially when designing and putting media projects into practice.

    In order to not only come up with ideas but to successfully implement them too, communication and organization skills are a must. Mediamatics technicians must be able to communicate effectively and to plan projects in a structured manner. It is also important to be able to work very well in a team because the work is often done in interdisciplinary groups.

  • Mediamatics technicians, Federal VET Diploma, are sought after in multiple industries, for instance the communication, marketing and web design departments of service providers, industrial companies or administrations.

  • Mediamatics technicians, Federal VET Diploma, have multiple opportunities to train and specialize. Following the apprenticeship, you can sit a professional examination, for instance to qualify as a mediamatics technician, technical polygrapher, a business IT specialist or an ICT application developer. For further qualifications, the higher technical examinations is an option, which can be used to train as a web project manager or ICT manager. Another option is to attend a higher technical school and to train in fields such as marketing management, media technology or computer science. It is also possible to study at a University of Applied Sciences to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in media engineering, information science, computer science or business information technology. 

  • The profession offers promising prospects because the advance of digitization and technological development is continuing to increase the demand for skilled workers with digital skills. Mediamatics technicians are especially in demand in areas such as web design, social media, IT support, graphic design and marketing because of their versatility, in particular due to their ability to handle technical, creative and communicative tasks. 

  • The main difference between an IT technician and mediamatics technician is their remit and specialization. Mediamatics technicians are all-rounders who combine creative tasks such as graphic design, multimedia production and marketing with technical know-how. They often work on projects that combine technology and design, e.g. website creation or social media campaigns. IT technicians, by contrast, are specialists in technical IT areas. They focus on programming, software development, network technology and system administration.
